How to Choose the Correct Color Roofing to Compliment Your Home

Accounting for up to 40 percent of your home’s visible exterior, your roof plays a key role in curb appeal, making the correct color choice a critical part in your home’s overall appearance.

Coordinate with Siding and Shutters

All colors must work together to achieve a visually coordinated appeal to the eye. The roof color should provide the needed contrast.

A deep brown roof would blend in with wood siding-stained dark. Brown shingles would work with beige siding, a mild contrast, or with white, a more distinct contrast.

It also ties nicely when your roof picks up tones from the color of your window shutters, front door, and/or accent trim.

Know When to Use Color Blends

Asphalt shingle lines are produced in solid and blended colors. The plainer the siding, the more a blended color pattern will add to your home’s curb appeal.

A solid black roof on a home with deep brown siding creates a boring combination. Using a charcoal base but flecked with greens, tans and browns would be most appealing.

As an opposite, if your siding is varied or you have brick with multiple shades or a stone front with assorted colors, then choosing a color-blended shingle will appear terribly busy.

Multi-level homes often feature darker shingles to make the roof look more substantial to balance the height of the house.

Ranch style homes tend to look best with medium colors.

Be Consistent with Neighborhood Standards

For resale value, it is not a clever idea to have the most unique house in the neighborhood. Try choosing a color or blend consistent with what others in your area are using. Especially the case when homes are close together or near the road. In many neighborhoods, a darker, more conservative color is the best choice. Do not forget to check the bylaws of your homeowner’s association when choosing your exterior color choices.

Always Choose a Dark Neutral if Unsure of Color Choice

If you cannot decide on a color, always go with dark neutrals. Browns and grays work on a broad range of home styles and colors.

The following list will help you decide what color roof will look best with the exterior of your home:
